sketches and new works

A sketch from my artist residency at the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area...I spent many days hiking the trails to various waterfalls. This is downstream from the larger falls, along the trail. As one should expect, the window of light is brief at the actual falls. Head Honcho at the Park, Jim Milestone, was generous in offering history, wildlife stories and as guide to some of the more difficult Falls to access. He also makes a great wine- has his own label....

He also left me at said falls, prey to rattlers, bears, mountain lions and the like with the comment 'No worries, just pick up a rock and toss it...you'll be fine...Did you leave anything edible in your car?'

'Carmel By The Sea'   Oil - 35 x25 cm. painted during Plein Air Convention

Carmel By The Sea, 35 x 25 cm, Oil

This was painted in Carmel, during the recent Plein Air Conference in Monterey, CA. Painted as the light changed dramatically with the clouds drifting in from the sea. I used a panel purchased in Kaliningrad, Russia.

The next day I was returning to the convention hall with this piece and bumped into Michael Harding. Michael mixes exquisite paints consistently and has a great sense of humour, and an absolute devotion for his craft as well as some secret recipes to share....

I came away with some great paints, a secret recipe for Yorkshire Pudding, and two new friends.

Some of the most rewarding moments of our gathering are simple exchanges between fellow artists and peers, sharing insights and observations about our work and process.

Artist's disclaimer:

This may or not make chronological sense, that is in a linear time-like fashion. Time and it's apparition should be discussed seperately, if ever.

Well, it's hard to be blogging or journaling while one is on the road... even though its an appealing idea.

During my journey West to the 2013 Plein Air conference and then later to an Artist residency, I found it almost impossible with sketchy wifi connections, storms...I mean BAD storms!! to chronicle my travels from last April to Monterey and beyond with an ipad and iphone.

Nonetheless, I have a few tales and pics to share... it was a good albeit challenging journey from the east to where I am now.
